The main way that I will use my capstone will to help open up opportunities for me is likely a writing example. It is an example of the research and writing skills I learned in the ENVS major at Lewis & Clark. I will link to my capstone on my website and divert potential employers to it. I think it is probably unlikely anyone will read it through, but having a long writing sample will be valuable.
I hope to be able to find a way to weave my interests in art and environmental studies during my career. I either want to bring the ENVS perspective into art spaces, or use design and communication skills to create media for nonprofits. There are many ways to do so, but having evidence of my ability to weave environmental studies and art in a valuable way will be something I can reference in the future. My capstone demonstrates my thought process doing this and the education background I have in both subjects. The ENVS department fosters skills weaving interdisciplinary subjects in order to shed new light on familiar ways of thinking. Each of our capstones is an example of this and they are a great way to exemplify this skill to potential employers.
The networking experience and research I have done for this capstone will be valuable to reference during interviews. The artists I considered work with a variety of subjects and have a lot to contribute to popular environmental conversations. I will be able to reference this information in order to relate my art education to potential environmental jobs. This is a valuable practice to have engaged in and hopefully it will have provided me with marketable skills. Recently, I have mentioned my capstone in an interview for an art-educator position that I am hoping to get. The interviewer and I were able to have a great conversation about the importance of art education. The topics in my capstone and the artists that I interviewed were relevant to the discussion.
Completing my capstone has given me confidence in my work and ability to complete long projects. It is an artifact of my stamina and ability to see a project through and stay with an idea for an extended amount of time. This is the first writing and research project I completed that I worked on for more than a few weeks. The ability to stick with a project for long periods of time is valuable and a testament to my perseverance.
