Over the last four years, I’ve learned a lot through the environmental studies program almost all of which was useful in the capstone process. Not only have I learned different ways of thinking in the core classes as well as the breath classes. I was able to take classes in so many different departments and gain knowledge from those professors. All my classes together have prepared me for my senior capstone.
Before coming to college I knew what environmental studies was but I didn’t know the way of thinking that was specific to the discipline. The core class I took showed me a lens to analyze my classes and readings for the next four years. These classes taught me how to consider multiple sides when looking at environmental problems. This skill was extremely important when researching intricate topics and situations. Interdisciplinary has been a word I’ve heard from the environmental studies program since I was a freshman but this approach really did help me not only for my capstone but also success in all the classes I’ve taken in college. During these classes, I was also able to create outcomes from semester-long projects that were practice runs for creating my capstone.
Other Important Courses
I was lucky to be able to take so many amazing classes in the last four years. Each one prepared me for this capstone process in a different way. Some classes had a very direct connection to my topic like Environmental Law and Global Resource Dilemmas. While other classes didn’t match my capstone topic but did leave me with questions and thoughts that helped me come up with a capstone topic like Construction the American Landscape and Political Economy of Food. There was such a range of classes I was able to take and I really enjoyed taking classes in multiple departments.
Skills Along the Way
Even during my senior year, the thought of writing a thesis seems daunting but over the years I was able to acquire skills to make the process more manageable. Many classes in the Environmental Studies Major wanted students to question what they were taught and the world around them. In this major, I was able to learn how to read efficiently and technical skills like Excel and GIS. My computer skills have gotten much better because of this major as well as my research skills which were both good skills to have when going through a capstone process.
